So the morning started off rather ominously, half the guys
meeting at the club and the other half deciding to meet at the Dan… And as
usual no one can get hold of Robey…no phone calls, no messages….nothing. Just as we decide to leave the club , in
rolls Robey like a spring zephyr looking like he stepped off the beach in his BRIGHT ORANGE shorts and slip slops and
wearing a hat that we are all sure came from the set of a “Crocodile Dundee”
movie.
So we get to the Dan and WOW what a transformation… from last
years cracked up pitch and gravel beds in the out field to what looked like a
decent wicket and an actual out field…. With grass! So it was a little slow but
at least no one had to dive on gravel!
With Heatherbank batting first, the guys seemed positive and
were looking to score big…Our openers JP and Wellsey walk in with a ”don’t
worry we got this” air among the guys…
First over… snick…and every fielder this side of the world
seemed to hear it and go up…..our middle order nervously stretching to don pads….NOT
OUT! Bat on pad.
But a few balls later JP is out, starting a procession that
resembled the GREAT TREK. In walks our VC Brian “stato” Riddle and a few balls
later out he comes.
ENTER RIAAN
JEGGELS…..first ball and its dug in short…WHALLOOOOP!6… Next ball surely has to
be full… short again WHALLOOOOOOOOP! ITS EVEN BIGGER! Great way to open your
account any day I’d say!
Wellsey proceeds to
go out and Robey strolls in and shortly afterwards out he comes and with Russel
doing the same we suddenly have lower order batsmen scrambling to get ready, nerves
rattled at what looks like our top and middle order were holding a 90% off sale
on wickets. Werner “BIG fern” Badenhorst is next in and plays a supporting role
to master blaster “Jeggie” right through to drinks in which time Riaan has
played his way past 50 seemingly oblivious of the earlier wickets dropping like
flys on the other end. With Wern departing in the power play for a patient and
well played 25 and Riaan joined by Tim it looked like we still had a chance of
posting a decent total. Riaan continued to score at will and it seemed to be
raining boundaries including a ^ onto the roof and one that nearly killed our
scorer Fritzy…who by the way travelled all the way to the Dan to support and
help.
Into the nervous 90’s Riaan went with a 6 over the sight
screen . the problem is we think Tim was more nervous than Riaan was, almost
running himself out 3 times while “Jeggie” was on 99.Flashes of Donald and
Klusner at the world cup sprang to mind as it seemed like we needed that run to
win.
The hundred finally came up and Riaan raises his arms.
Casually hands Tim his bat and proceeds to “GANGNAM STYLE IT” centre pitch. He
went on to score 120 in 108 balls including 7 fours and ….. 11 sixes in his 138 minute stay at the crease.-The first super league hundred at
Heatherbank in 3 seasons.
Coming down to the last few overs it was time for the lower
order to show what they made of and score some quick runs.
Local D&P boy Shaun “ pac man “ Whinney walks in and
shortly after Tim falls for a valiant 25 having supported Riaan all the
way.Duncan “JA NO LEKKA “ Nel walks in and is bounced out leaving the D&P
combo of Whinney and last man Gino at the crease with the mission to survive
the full 50 overs. Surely tho, number 9 and 11 cant string too many
partnerships together…But team D&P score with a flurry of boundaries and
good running between the wickets to notch up another unbeaten stand of 20 odd
taking their average last wicket partnership close to 80 run average, with Gino scoring 16 off 8 and Whinney
ending on a pac man score of 6 off 12 bringing the team score to 275/9
LUNCH REPORT: hot dogs, no marge but plenty of sauce to make
up for it and bottle of cola… another 6 #

The Infamous ScoreBook 275 runs later!
After a nice stretch it was time to bowl with Gino and
Duncan sharing the new ball working as a partnership with Gino striking and
Duncan trying to keep it tight… and another trend seems to develop other than
the steady fall of wickets….4 out of their top 6 going out on the last ball of
an over. Dunc's finished up on 2/36 off 6 after some lusty hacking by a few of
the kwadwesi guys and Gino claiming his 5’fer and then sending down a snorter
of a Yorker to cartwheel middle stump because as he says… no 5’er is complete
without seeing some stumps fly! Gino finished on 6/30 off 10 straight overs
leaving the spinners to finish them off. The Kwadwesi guys put up a solid
defence but with JP taking a wicket and them 9 down with just short of 200 to
still get it was inevitable, with Russell finishing off for us with a run out and toll gate taking the bails off!
Thanks to all the guys who came out to support Uncle Pat, Polla and
especially to Fritzy aka Sledge machine for scoring and to Robey for looking after our scorer ;-)
Congrats to Riaan and Eugene on their performances and all
the guys on an emphatic win….
